PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET GUIDANCE
1. Title of project
Obstetricians lived experience of ensuring informed consent when women and birthing
people are planning care outside of guidelines during childbirth.
2. Purpose of study
To gain an understanding in the lived experience of obstetricians who work in the National
Health Service (NHS) in the UK on caring for women who choose care outside of guidelines
during childbirth. The study hopes to understand what it is like providing informed consent in
these situations and what challenges and barriers are faced as well as how they experience
working with the multidisciplinary team to provide personalised care and informed consent.
3. Who is the researcher?
Frances Kilmurray Registered Midwife as part of Midwifery Masters degree at ARU
Martina Donaghy Supervisor- Senior midwifery lecturer at ARU
4. Why have I been asked to participate?
You are an obstetrician working in the UK who works with women making informed choices in their
pregnancy and birth.
5. How many people will be asked to participate?
Between 4-6 Obstetricians will be selected to participate in the study
6. Do I have to take part?
There is no obligation to take part, you can refuse to take part without giving a reason.
You can also withdraw at any time up to the point of final write up. Data can be withdrawn until
approximately 2months after the interviews takes place (anticipated May/June 2022).
Once the researcher has written the research up for their degree or published findings it will not be
possible to withdraw. During the interview you can decline to answer any interview questions you
do not wish to.
7. Has the study got ethical approval?
The study has ethical approval from the ethics committee at ARU.
8. What will happen to the results of the study?
The report will be written up for the researcher’s major project dissertation. Participants will be
offered a summary of the findings which will be shared with the participants by secure email. The
research is also intended to be published as a journal article and potentially presented at
conferences in the UK.
